Our Table, a family cookbook, is a collection of my family’s recipes and the stories that accompany them. This project was completed for my senior thesis at Portland State Univercity. I set out to create an intimate, but also functional, piece of work about and for my family, but I ended up with a lot more.
Over the course of 3 months, I collected and transcribed recipes, curated stories, created illustrations, but ultimately took a precious snapshot of mine and my husband's childhood's and culture. I was also called to remember the every day beauty and importance of stopping to share food with the people you love.
After compiling all of the recipes and stories for the cookbook, I started to illustrate. The cookbook includes two full page illustrations to introduce each section (one for savory and one for sweets), and smaller individual illustrations for each recipe.
I played with mixing classic type, to represent and respect the generations and heritage represented in the content, with loose, lighthearted illustrations and playful type, to keep the book approachable and relatable.
The final cookbook lives as a small, hard cover, hand bound book.
